Polygon’s #15 Game of the Decade
What is Everything
Whoever you are, whatever you are and where ever you are, you’re in the middle - that’s the game.
Everything is an interactive experience and reality simulation game. There is no right or wrong way to play, and each person's game will be different.
Playing Everything involves traveling through the Universe and seeing it from different points of view, it has elements of role playing games, sandbox & simulation. The systems connecting the game are designed to create moments of peace, beauty, sadness and joy - and allow the player to do whatever they want. Everything requires no player input - it will play automatically if left unattended.
The game features an original 3 hour score from composer Ben Lukas Boysen (Gravity) and a rich world of sound by Eduardo Ortiz Frau (The Stanley Parable). It's code was written by Damien Quartz (SuperHyperCube).
Everything was created and self funded by David OReilly over the course of 3.5 years. It’s gameplay film was unveiled @ the Berlin Film Festival, the first video game to be shown since the festival's founding in 1951. This same film qualified for an Academy award, a first for any interactive project.
A Nature Simulation
Everything is a simulation of reality as a phenomenon of interdependent systems. There are thousands of things that perceive, think and interact differently while being driven by the same underlying rules. All things are aware of themselves, each other and their environment, and simulate with or without player interaction.
A Universe of Things
Things are the basic unit of Everything, and the entirety of the game is designed to be playable. Levels can be characters and vice versa. The game's universe is designed to let you travel freely in any direction, and intuitively find things when and where you'd expect them to be. Continued exploration will lead you to unseen environments, containing new sights, sounds, things, thoughts and abilities.
Create your own Universe
Everything features a persistent universe that can be both explored and used as a creative canvas. The game is fundamentally changed by player input, meaning you can create and design levels as you're inside them. Each part of the world allows complete freedom to create your own images, worlds, scenes and experiences using things instead of pixels or polygons.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Help I am stuck!
Don't worry! 99% of problems are solved by saving & reloading into your game.
You can also try going Settings -> Restart Area which will spawn you into a new thing in the same area.
Why do the animals move this way?
Because they do.
I am hearing loud noises and seeing crazy images
The game will automatically optimize itself if it is pushed to very low frame rates. It does this by creating Disasters which can be switched off under Settings. If you are seeing these very frequently, you may be playing the game below minimum spec and require a faster machine.
How do I stop Narration?
Go Settings -> Thoughts and switch off.
How do I pause Narration?
Open the Mind (touchpad/[m] key), ensure the audio is in the middle & highlighted, and press confirm to pause.
You can also go Pause -> Things -> Audio and pause from there.
Are the talks public domain?
No - they appear under special license from the Alan Watts Project - a venture by Mark Watts - Alan Watts’ son, who himself recorded many of the talks.
Where can I find more Alan Watts?
Many of Alan's talks are available for purchase here - and funds go towards completing the massive archive of his work.
Any tips?
Check out the Help section of the Pause menu, the last card there has some good tips. The game also has a lot of secret controls which you can discover through play.
Are there other games like this?
Try out Mountain!

Development history
Everything has been in the making for 3.5 years with a core dev team of 2 people, David OReilly and Damien Quartz, who collaborated on Mountain, released in 2014 on Steam & iOS.
Mountain discovered a new audience of non gamers and gamers alike. It has found itself used as a relaxation tool, musical instrument, meditation aid, sound generator and installation. Everything is a much broader expansion of the ideas & approach behind Mountain.
