iHologram update
August 24 2008, 12:46 pm

The iHologram has become one of the All time most popular videos on Vimeo in the space of a day, and is currently on the front page of almost every technology site…   I’m getting way too many emails about it, so for those who had to know:

The iHologram app was not real. It was an illustration of an idea I had which I believe could work with the technology (combining anamorphosis and motion sensing). Unfortunately I’m just an ideas person, and I can show how things should look, but I’m no hardcore programmer.

I’d be happy to collaborate with a developer or studio who want’s to make it happen, I’m bursting with ideas for the interactive world, but right now all my attention is on filmmaking.

My aim with this was to tackle the problem of 3d viewing in an original way using current technology, not fool anyone… so for those who doubted but still supported it, respect. I hope it inspires some talented programmers out there.

Ive just finished coding an application for the iphone/ipod touch. It gives the illusion of a 3d hologram jumping off the screen.

Here’s a video of it in use, featuring the Cat from my award-winning but unfinished cartoon PSS:

The application works by assuming a constant viewing angle (35-45 degrees), typical for when the device is placed on a tabletop. The 3d scene’s perspective is warped using anamorphosis, the same technique used in Hans Holbein’s painting The Ambassadors. This application does the exact same but updates dynamically.

The software uses the ipod’s built-in gyroscope to calculate rotation on the y-axis, so we can look around the environment around by turning the device, there are also controls for manual rotation with a slider on the left hand side of the screen.

My programming knowledge is limited, if any iphone developers want to collaborate on this stuff please get in touch!

Showreel 2008

The splash page of this site now has a showreel, it’s the first time I’ve ever had one online… not normally a fan of these things but it’s a publicity obligation. It should be a good introduction to my work for the uninitiated.

embed code:

<object width=”400″ height=”225″>    <param name=”allowfullscreen” value=”true” />    <param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always” />    <param name=”movie” value=”http://www.vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1272432&server=www.vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=ffffff&fullscreen=1″ />    <embed src=”http://www.vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1272432&server=www.vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=ffffff&fullscreen=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowfullscreen=”true” allowscriptaccess=”always” width=”400″ height=”225″></embed></object>

*UPDATE*

“Please Say Something 1-15″ just won Best Animation at the festival!
Thanks to everyone who helped get the film in last minute, and those of you who voted. I really appreciate it.

The talk went extremely well, the turnout even including celebrity computer graphics genius Ken Perlin, whose work stretches back to doing the groundbreaking 3d on Tron.

Hai, Ive been busy doing the initial concept art on Garth Jennings’s next feature, which is really exciting. The only downside is it’ll take a couple of years till anyone sees it. My work on Garth’s last film Son of Rambow was recently covered by AWN, it has a clip of the dream sequence as well. Have a look!

Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes. We had a great night joined by animation luminaries Shynola, Tokyoplastic, PES and Dougal Wilson. At one point in the night we actually discovered the greatest single idea ever, but then forgot it soon afterwards. It was something to do with cats.

Fans of PSS: I took the ads away a while back, after 20k views they made about $11, kind of pointless. Also, it just won an honorary mention at Ars Electronica, it seems to have been beaten by a hair to the top spot by Pixczar. The next 5 episodes are practically finished, need to clear some music for them. **If anyone is interested in making a better site for these please get in touch!

Finally thanks to everyone who attended my talk at the backup festival/bauhaus university, I had a great time there.
