Here it is, my latest and greatest short film Please Say Something! Winner of the Golden Bear for best short film at the 2009 Berlinale.
*DVD in the works, many extras & other shorts included, drop me a mail for notification. Should be ready next week*

I worked hard to make this free online, so pass it around to everyone you know and if you have a blog, embed it. Embed it several times over! The downside of making it free is that some festivals will no longer value it and certain channels wont buy it, and the only real way of making up for that is to spread it far and wide. Help prove that the web as a distribution model for animation works!

The film is under exclusive distribution by Future Shorts, proudly being the first ever HD film on their channel.

*update: feature on BoingBoing!
*update 2: comments are enabled for the first time on this blog.
*update 3: youtube seems to wash out the colors/subtitles, check the vimeo instead
*update 4: feature on Motionographer

Thanks for explaining the plight….. also add how do you need assistance knowing how not being able to take it other places affect you and maybe a donation link……? I will look around this site more and hopefully i’ll find someway because i appreciate the work.

David, I’ve kept tabs on your stuff since the VSNARES piece. Wonderful work by the three of you on PSS. Good to see it all together at last. Duly blogged!

Comment by Raju Tavadia 02.27.09 @ 10:15 pm

Great job. It was moving.

Comment by juepucta 02.27.09 @ 11:33 pm

though i had seen it before the Berlinale, i think i’ll always associate this one with my short stay in Berlin: the wind in PSS feels like the freezing cold berliner wind.

cheers

Awesome indeed!

Wow truly stunning, been watching PSS for a few months and its great to see how it all turned out after the crash, it was a great ending. Thanks for the short, and congratulations on your award.

The cat is the GIRL???

mind = blown

David, this is wonderful. Blogged, of course.
I’d say all the tags from the title cards should go into the Youtube tags, but they won’t fit, will they?

Gosh I’m so proud of you, onwards and upwards Mr. oReilly!

Comment by Eimhin 02.28.09 @ 4:11 am

David,

Congratulations! The wait is finally over. I really admire your belief in the power of the web and your fearlessness in redifining the playing field for modern animators.

I’m also glad that you’ve enabled comments. It’s another great step in embracing the internet as a distribution medium.

As I’ve said before, great work. Truly inspiring!

WOAH
I love how cinematic it feels, especially the last quater. It totally delivered more than I was expecting. Bravo! I’m going to watch it again now.

Comment by Ross Phillips 02.28.09 @ 1:53 pm

This is a great film, David and much deserving of it’s Bear.Congratulations.

Comment by Nora 02.28.09 @ 2:35 pm

Wonderful to see it all finished up, congratulations on the award and I’ll be sure to spread this around Bournemouth student’s animating elite. I can’t say how much I love your short.

Will you be releasing a full HD 1280 x 720 version sometime? It’d be great to show this at full impact.

Congrats

Comment by Adam Hodgson 02.28.09 @ 4:22 pm

Thanks everyone!
@mr.B: I guess I can set up some donation thing when I have time, I havent thought about it
@Adam: it’s actually hd720 already, you can change it to HD with the little up-arrow on the right of the yt player. however I recommend the vimeo version as the gamma of the youtube HD is off, some of the subtitles are washed out.

Wow. Seriously amazing work! Im love the ending. Totally unexpected and poignant. Wonderful style. Thanks so much for this. One this that I noticed since I had seen the first part before is that I can see a marked difference in the quality of the second part (ep. 4 or something?). I just mean in complexity and I think it’s really great. It’s really a beautiful piece.

Comment by Galen Beals 03.01.09 @ 2:13 am

David, I really enjoyed the short. Great work! It’s the first of your work I’ve seen and I really found it moving. Keep up the good work and I hope this gets the attention it deserves.

I love the look you’ve developed. It feels very authentic… which is difficult in the void of cg. I’m officially inspired!

I watched it long ago and I knew it would win something. It’s coldness and warmth at the same time are superb. Congrats!

Comment by Oriol Ferrer Mesià 03.01.09 @ 7:22 pm

I noticed that the “parts” aren’t divided up so dramatically like they were when you first presented the PSS series. Did you replace the opening and closing segments because you didn’t like them anymore or because maybe it would get redundant when the film is presented as a whole?

Comment by Charles 03.02.09 @ 12:33 am

where can i get that music

Comment by jake 03.02.09 @ 1:41 am

Hi David,

After watching the entire short a couple of times, I do have one qualm – I miss the episodic nature of the series; the way it was released earlier.

This includes everything from the “THE END” screen and the little sound effect that accompanied it.

That said, it doesn’t take away anything from the film, only my own sense of nostalgia and familiarity.

Did you have any trouble letting go of that aspect?

Comment by Rohit Iyer 03.02.09 @ 7:49 am

Hello David!

Immense amount of kudos for making the effort/sacrifice of releasing this for all to see. Very inspiring! It’s been embedded on my blog http://www.pixelkink.com and I think Motionographer has featured it too!

Great work! Keep it up!

Sebas van den Brink

absolutely wonderful. you are the future of filmmaking. i was waiting to find out when PSS would play in L.A. because i never thought i’d be able to see the film in its entirety otherwise, so it’s fucking awesome you were able to get it online for us to see for free. thanks. you are an immense inspiration.

Hi, David;

I find your animation work to be one of the most original and inspiring of our time. I just hope you keep developping your stories for a long, long time.

Thank you;

Juan Luis.

I’m really touched by scenarii, the realisation is experimental and amazing, I say Hello to my new master !

This was a…surreal experience. I wasn’t quite sure what to think, initially; should I be frightened, or should I be thoroughly impressed? I think the latter was the clear answer. This is a wonderful work, something I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to stop watching for a while.

Many many thanks for doing what you do and sharing it! Very inspirational.

Arguably, the web is a very viable distribution model with a wider reach than everything else put together. If it had been limited only to festivals and dvds, several magnitudes fewer people would’ve had the chance to see it.

I’ve seen PSS at the short film festival in Oberhausen for the first time – and on the big screen.

To my mind, it was a “must win” film in the competition. (And I have seen all films in this year’s German Competition). My congratulations for actually winning the first prize at the festival.

I love this film. Until now I’ve watched it around 50 times – and I am still seeing new details.

Thank you soooo much for releasing it through the internet.
